چکیده مقاله:

Current studies elucidate the metal stress attenuation potential of melatonin in Cucumis sativus seedlings growing in cadmium contaminated conditions. Melatonin is an indoleamine molecule, capable of ameliorating environmental stresses and regulate plant growth. Seeds of C. sativus were immersed in different levels of melatonin and grown under cadmium stress for 15 days. Cadmium stress reduced seed germination, growth, biomass production, gas exchange capacity, stomatal conductance and chlorophyll (Chl) content in C. sativus seedlings. The increased level of malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) caused oxidative stress in C. sativus plants under cadmium stress. Melatonin application emphatically revamped germination, shoot, and plant biomass production. The melatonin pretreatment aggrandized plant length, root length, and expression of stress related genes (CsHA2, CsHA3, CsHA4, CsHA8 and CsHA9) along with amplification in activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), nitrate reductase (NR), and ascorbate peroxidase (AP) helping in modulation of cadmium stress in C. sativus seedlings. The improved activity of antioxidant scavengerswas ascribed to the reduced level of H2O2 and MDA in plants under stress. Furthermore, conjugated increase of photosynthetic activity, indole acetic acid contents, and glutathione contents was observed in melatonin treated seedlings in a dose-responsive manner. The present study elicits the metal stress attenuating potential of melatonin by regulating metabolic activities and growth of C. sativus under cadmium stress.

Exogenous Melatonin Improves Antioxidant Defense in Cucumber Seeds (Cucumis sativus L.) Germinated under Chilling Stress

The relationship between exogenous melatonin applied into cucumber seeds during osmopriming and modifications of their antioxidant defense was studied. Accumulation of hydrogen peroxide, antioxidant enzyme activities and glutathione pool were investigated in embryonic axes isolated from the control, osmoprimed, and osmoprimed with melatonin seeds. Germinating cucumber seeds are very sensitive t...

Stress reduction through consolation in chimpanzees.

Consolation, i.e., postconflict affiliative interaction directed from a third party to the recipient of aggression, is assumed to have a stress-alleviating function. This function, however, has never been demonstrated. This study shows that consolation in chimpanzees reduces behavioral measures of stress in recipients of aggression. Furthermore, consolation was more likely to occur in the absen...

Differential response of antioxidant enzymes to cadmium stress in tolerant and sensitive cell line of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.).

Previously, a stable cell suspension of cucumber tolerant to 100 microM CdCl(2) was obtained (Gzyl & Gwóźdź, 2005, Plant Cell Tissue Organ Cult 80: 59-67). In this study, the relationship between the activity of antioxidant enzymes and cadmium tolerance of cucumber cells was analyzed. A cadmium-sensitive and the cadmium-tolerant cell lines were exposed to 100 microM and 200 microM CdCl(2) and t...

Induction of defense responses in cucumber plants (Cucumis sativus L. ) By the biocontrol agent trichoderma harzianum

The potential of the biocontrol agent Trichoderma harzianum T-203 to trigger plant defense responses was investigated by inoculating roots of cucumber seedlings with Trichoderma in an aseptic, hydroponic system. Trichoderma-treated plants were more developed than nontreated plants throughout the experiment. Electron microscopy of ultrathin sections from Trichoderma-treated roots revealed penetr...

Protective mechanisms of Cucumis sativus in diabetes-related modelsof oxidative stress and carbonyl stress

INTRODUCTION Oxidative stress and carbonyl stress have essential mediatory roles in the development of diabetes and its related complications through increasing free radicals production and impairing antioxidant defense systems. Different chemical and natural compounds have been suggested for decreasing such disorders associated with diabetes. The objectives of the present study were to investi...
